Welcome to the Wasatch
Range Eventing Association of Utah!
is the equestrian equivalent of a triathlon, and is considered to be the ultimate test of true horsemanship. Eventing demands that horse and rider perform three distinctly different disciplines:
dressage, cross-country and show jumping.
The WREA is dedicated to the
education, development, and promotion of the sport of eventing along the
A Message From Your WREA President
The starting box- A couple of rails on the ground, a few organized metal panels, a century old oak fence with elaborate garnishments. Whatever the shape or form, to step onto this eventerís holy ground is a right and a privilege only created by hard work, determination, grit, and a loving trusting bond between you as an eventer and your equine partner.
The feel of leather in your hands as it grows taught with the anticipation of your partners pull on the bit, the well of adrenaline that bubbles from your very core, and the moment of peace and serenity felt just before the countdown. It is why we are all addicted to our great sport.
For those of you who do not know me yet, my name is Todd Smyrl. I, along with my wife Adrienne and son Devon, own and operate Gemini Farm in western Utah. As I press my spurs in, leaving the starting box as your new WREA club president, my goal is to be like that first element approached on course, inviting, easy going, something to create a rhythm, a positive confidence builder to what lies ahead. There are definitely some elements out there that are tricky and challenging. As officers, volunteers, competitors, trainers, sponsors, and families with a common love of sport, joined as one by the WREA, we can easily master the obstacles with great scope and success.
Please realize that the WREA is your club. It is a direct reflection of what we as members put into it. I believe that it can continue as a great pillar in the horse community along the Wasatch Range. It opens the doors to our sport at the local level allowing novice and experienced horse and rider teams to learn and grow with or without the exposure and expense of large out of state competitions. It is an outlet for individuals, local barns, and trainers to foster and grow new talent, learn from one another, and most importantly, it is a group to share our great love. That said, letís get a jump start on closing out 2013 and breathing new life into the club moving forward.
The 2013 eventing season was full of thrills, some spills, and events new and old. Amazing feats of horsemanship were on full display it seemed at every turn. Friendships were started or rekindled as the first flowers blossomed through till old man winter reared his ugly head. Our mounts became more accustomed to putting into practice that which we worked so hard for in the off season. To celebrate these accolades and as one of my first items of business, please allow me to add my invitation to you, your friends, loved ones, and anyone considering becoming a member, to the annual WREA banquet. Festivities are scheduled for January 11th 2014 starting 5pm at the Marriot University Park. Invitations are in the mail or you can go towreautah.com to find tickets. Remember to send those yearend results in to Adrienne by December 11th so that scores can be tallied up.
We are still looking for some additional sponsors for the banquet and the coming year. I cannot wait to acknowledge and announce those who give to the club. As a sponsor, not only will you receive recognition at the banquet, but will be recognized throughout the year at various events and on the official WREA website. For questions about sponsorships, please contact Sandy Blancher or sponsor directly on our website. Also, along with sponsorships, donít forget the banquetís silent auction - please donate items through Darcy Conklin at Lynnleigh Farm. As a caveat to the celebration, we will be announcing the 2014 area event, clinic, and schooling show schedule which includes several new venues. There will also be an opportunity for you to provide input as to how to grow our club and enhance its ability to provide for our members.
We are only a turkey and a tree away from next season. I wish you all the very best during the holidays. Before you know it we will all be cheering at the start box again.
